Mobile or Stationary Racking: Which to choose?

The most common question when planning an archive is whether it is worth investing in a sliding system or whether simple, free-standing shelving will do? Here are the main differences that determine the choice:

Why choose MOBILE racking?

The mobile (floating) archive system is mounted on special bases that move on rails. This leaves only one working aisle, which can be opened by pushing the racks aside.

  • Space saving (ROI). This is the main argument. If renting or maintaining a square metre of your office is expensive, a mobile archive pays for itself very quickly. You can store twice as many documents in the same space compared to stationary shelving;
  • Maximum security (GDPR). Unlike open shelving, the mobile archive is collapsed into a single block when work is finished and can be lockable with one lock. This ensures the confidentiality of sensitive data and personnel files;
  • Cleanliness and protection. The recessed sections of the racking keep out light and dust. This is particularly important for libraries, museums or medical institutions where files need to remain undamaged for decades;
  • Ease of operation. Although the system weighs tonnes, the advanced gear technology allows the racks to be easily moved by one person simply by turning the ergonomic handlebar.

When is it better to choose stationary racking?

Classic open racking remains indispensable in certain situations:

  • Continuous flow. If the archive has several or several dozen employees working at the same time, a stationary system is superior. All aisles are open at the same time, so workers do not block each other;
  • There are no space restrictions. If you have a large, inexpensive basement or warehouse and space saving is not a priority, stationary racking will be a quicker and cheaper initial investment.

Why trust Storsistem with archive engineering?

We do not offer individual metal shelves, but full archiving space engineering. Before designing the system, our engineers carefully assess the dimensions of your room, the strength of the floor (load distribution on the rails) and the specifics of the documents to be stored. All racking shelves are step adjustable every 33 mm, making the distances ideal for fitting to standard binders or boxes - you don't pay for „empty air“.

All system components are made of high-strength structural steel (EN10204 standard) and CE certified. With more than 20 years of experience, we ensure smooth delivery and professional installation throughout Lithuania.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Metalsistem Super 1-2-3 racks

  1. Where can Metalsistem Super 1-2-3 racking be used?
    These racks offer exceptional versatility. They are ideal for domestic premises (garages, cellars, storerooms) as well as for commercial or industrial spaces (archives, shops, logistics centres, car service stations). Thanks to their aesthetic high-tech design, they are often used even in public office spaces.

  2. Do I need special tools to assemble the racking?
    No, it's an internationally patented, frictionless collection system. You won't need any screws or special tools to assemble, disassemble or modify the rack - just a rubber mallet.

  3. Can I adjust the height of the shelves?
    Yes, the height of the shelves can be adjusted very easily and precisely in 33 mm increments. This allows the rack to adapt perfectly to the dimensions of the goods or boxes you are storing, making the most of the available space.

  4. What is the maximum load that these racks can withstand?
    Although the racks are lightweight, they are made of high-strength certified steel. The rack frame (185 cm high) can withstand a load of up to 1100 kg, while the 200-300 cm high frames can bear up to 1500 kg. The weight capacity per shelf depends on its length and can range from 120 kg to 280 kg evenly distributed.

  5. Do the racks need to be fixed to the floor or wall?
    According to safety standards, if the height of the racking frame exceeds 3 metres or is more than 5 times its depth, it must be securely fixed to the floor using special fixing pads and anchored to the wall. This is not necessary for lower, standard domestic racks but is recommended for maximum stability.

  6. Are these racks corrosion-resistant and suitable for cold rooms?
    Yes, Metalsistem racking is manufactured using the unique SENDZIMIR galvanising technology, which ensures high resistance to moisture and corrosion. They can even be used in cold rooms (in which case special frost-resistant plastic shelf panels are recommended).

  7. Can the racks be interconnected (extended)?
    It certainly is. It is a modular system. You can buy one basic rack and then simply buy plug-in (continuous) sections as demand grows. The system also allows for 90-degree corner joints, so you can easily furnish the entire perimeter of the room.

Construction Dimensions (Planning Guide)

Assembly instructions:

When planning the location of the racking in the room, please refer to the following standard dimensions for the Storsistem range:

Heights of the risers (frames):

  • 1850 mm (Standard for garage, office or home storage)
  • 2000 mm (commonly used in industrial warehouses and archives)
  • 2500 mm (The most popular warehouse height in Lithuania - commonly used in industrial warehouses and archives)
  • 3000 mm (For maximum storage volume utilisation - commonly used in industrial warehouses and archives)

Shelf Depths:

  • 320 mm (ideal for document archives and small details);
  • 400 mm;
  • 500 mm (versatile choice for commercial and domestic use);
  • 600 mm (industry standard for logistics warehouses);
  • 700 mm | 800 mm (for bulky goods).

Shelf lengths (Section width):

  • 600 mm | 900 mm | 1050 mm;
  • 1200 mm (the most popular choice on the market);
  • 1350 mm | 1500 mm | 1650mm | 1800 mm.

Shelf adjustment step:

  •  Every 33 mm (perforation at the full height of the stand).

Accurate Queue Length Calculation

IMPORTANT. The frames of the shelves have their own thickness, so the total length of the row is always greater than the sum of the shelves themselves.

  • The Golden Rule. Add 90 mm to the total length of the shelves;
  • Formula. Total row length = (Sum of all shelf lengths) + 90 mm;
  • Example. Connecting 3 sections of 1200 mm each;
  • Construction. 3600 mm + 90 mm (thickness of all frames);
  • Final result. You need 3690 mm of free floor space;
  • Tip. If you are installing the racking in a recess or between walls, always leave an extra tolerance of 10-20 mm to ensure that the structure fits easily even if the walls are uneven.

Basic + Plug-in module:
Each row must start from the Base Module (2 stands). All other sections are pluggable (1 rack) and connect to the previous structure, thus saving space and reducing cost.

Load Table (Maximum Load Capacity)

Loads are calculated in accordance with LST EN 15635, assuming uniform distribution of loads (UDL).
